Graphene research centre expected to host some of the world\'s leading advanced materials companies

UK-based BAM Construct has won the £30m design-and-build contract to build Manchester University’s Graphene research centre. It is estimated that the entire building will cost in the region of £60m.

The institute is to be the UK’s home of research into Graphene, the world’s thinnest, strongest and most conductive material. The 7,600m2 building will house cleanrooms for experiments, a research lab and other facilities.

Funding for the National Graphene Institute will come partially from the UK government, with £38m allocated. The university has also applied for £23m from the European Research and Development Fund.

Some of the world’s leading companies are expected to sign up to work at the centre, with applications of the material ranging from smartphones to drug delivery and computers.
