The Bioquell Q-10 relies on hydrogen peroxide vapour (HPV) to eradicate bugs within an enclosure

Superbugs - like persistent C.difficile and MRSA - threaten hospitals all around the UK where infection control is a high priority area. Many hospitals have introduced C.difficile reduction targets or have had these mandated by government bodies or regulators. When it comes to eliminating doubt, hospitals need efficient, secure and time-saving solutions to protect patients from infection risks. The challenge of infection control and successful outbreak management is one that the Bioquell team has chosen to take on.

After Betsi Cadwaladr Trust failed to control Clostridium difficile (C.diff) at Glan Clwyd hospital in Bodelwyddan and had to apologise for it in 2013, the trust set up a structured cleaning plan involving Bioquell’s bio-decontamination equipment. Three of the trust’s main hospitals based in Wrexham, Bodelwyddan and Bangor are now equipped with Bioquell Q-10s or ‘robot cleaners’ to deep-clean their wards and reduce infections caused by pathogens.

According to Professor Brian Duerden, emeritus professor of medical microbiology at Cardiff University, there has been 'significant progress' in the past year but there’s still more to be done. Healthcare associated infections (HCAIs) are 'still too high' in North Wales 'compared with elsewhere in Wales and comparators in England'. The targets set by the Welsh government to reduce HCAIs are still to be reached and represent a 'very significant challenge'.

The Bioquell Q-10 relies on hydrogen peroxide vapour (HPV) to eradicate bugs within an enclosure, including hopstial wards or rooms. This technology assures complete eradication of a large range of bacteria, viruses and fungi such as C.diff or MRSA on all surfaces. Using a simple process, HPV is vaporised and delivered into a room to deactivate micro-organisms. The process leaves no residue and no waiting period to use the room after the cleaning process.

Bioquell’s HPV process is eco-friendly, safe and repeatable for the sterilisation of rooms, buildings, equipment and sensitive electronics. Efficacy is backed up through scientific publications, plus use of Geobacillus stearothermophilus biological indicators, guaranteeing 6-log reduction. Chemical indicators – CIs – allow immediate visual confirmation of cycle success.
