Sustainable cleaning solution reduces chemical cost, water usage and labour while improving production time

An innovative, environmentally friendly sanitiser to be marketed by Sani-Matic has been approved for use in the US dairy industry. Sani-Matic’s partner Trustwater, a leader in the field of Electro-Chemical Activation (ECA) technology, submitted an amendment to the 2011 Pasteurised Milk Ordinance (PMO) to allow on-site generation of ECA sanitiser for cleaning milk vessels, containers, utensils and equipment. The National Conference on Interstate Milk Shipments approved the proposal, opening the door for a green alternative to traditional sanitisers.

“This is a win-win for the dairy industry,” said Ted Lingard, president and ceo of Sani-Matic. “Not only does this process provide a sustainable cleaning solution, it also reduces chemical cost, water usage and labour while improving worker safety and improving production time.”

ECA is the process of passing natural salt water through an electrolytic cell, creating two distinct solutions: a sanitiser called Ecasol and a caustic detergent called Aversol. The Ecasol sanitiser is pH neutral and is comprised of hypochlorous acid (HOCl), which is 100 times more effective than sodium hypochlorite, the primary chemical used in traditional sanitisers.

The Aversol caustic detergent is produced at an alkaline pH of 13.5 and is a potent antioxidant. Both solutions are non-toxic and non-hazardous to humans and to the environment.

“This non-toxic, highly effective sanitiser reduces both environmental and operator exposure while cleaning as effectively as chemicals that are currently used in the dairy industry,” said Gabe Miller, senior technical engineer at Sani-Matic.
