Technavio report divides the industry into three end-user segments: semiconductors; pharmaceuticals and hospitals

The global cleanroom consumables market is expected to be worth more than US$9bn by 2020, growing at a CAGR of over 5%, forecasts a new report.

The report by market research firm Technavio, Global Cleanroom Consumables Market 2016-2020, segments the market by end-user and divides it into three broad categories: semiconductors, pharmaceuticals and hospitals.

The semiconductor industry is expected to use more than $6bn of cleanroom consumables by 2020, growing at a CAGR of over 5%. This segment not only includes revenue generated from the semiconductor industry but also from sales in the electronics and flat panel display industries.

Increasing sales of laptops, smartphones, and tablets is the primary factor driving the semiconductor industry market, which is expected to continue to grow at a moderate rate due to continuous demand for smartphones globally, especially from developing countries such as China and India.

A steady growth in the electronics industry and demand for enhanced technology will drive R&D activities, thus boosting demand for cleanroom equipment and cleanroom consumables, the report says.

The biotechnology sector is predicted to become the fastest growing end-user of cleanroom technology and consumables during the forecast period

The pharmaceutical industry is expected to use more than $1bn of cleanroom consumables by 2020, growing at a CAGR of over 6%.

In the healthcare industry, cleanroom consumables find applications in industries such as pharmaceutical and biotechnology, hospitals, and among medical devices manufacturers. Laboratories for pathology, forensic, and environmental testing also make use of such products.

In 2014, the pharmaceutical industry was the largest end-user of the global healthcare cleanrooms consumables and equipment market, followed by the biotechnology and medical devices manufacturing industries.

According to Anju Ajaykumar, lead research analyst at Technavio for engineering tools, the biotechnology sector is predicted to become the fastest growing end-user of cleanroom technology and consumables during the forecast period. A major part of the growth will be driven by the emergence of biologics, with the adoption of biological products growing worldwide.

Hospitals are expected to use cleanroom consumables worth more than $517m by 2020, growing at a CAGR of over 6%.

Gloves are the most frequently used cleanroom consumable products in hospital cleanrooms. Nitrile gloves are used widely as they provide good elasticity and comfort. They are most suitable for use in biotechnology, medical devices, and pharmaceutical devices manufacturing as well as in hospital cleanrooms.

Europe and North America dominate the hospital cleanroom consumables market, accounting for almost 60%.

Technavio expects the maximum demand for cleanroom consumables to come from APAC countries during the forecast period due to rapid expansion of high-tech hospitals across developing countries such as India and China.
