HWI Global to build cleanroom at Walter Reed Army Institute

The project includes four separate cleanroom work zones

HWI Global, a Pittsburgh, US-based designer and builder of cleanrooms, has started to construct a Class 10,000 cleanroom at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research in Silver Springs, Maryland, under the direction of the United States Army Corp of Engineers.

The project includes four separate cleanroom work zones within the designated space. An ISO 7 clean work room will house two bio-safety cabinets and two incubators, as well as an ISO 8 centrifuge cleanroom.

HWI will install its proprietary Bio-Gard modular wall system; an aseptic, high-impact, Class 1/A bio-pharmaceutical wall system with heat-welded seams; and an air handling and control system.

Made from uPVC, Bio-Gard is an aseptic high-impact, finished surface with heat-welded seams that is suitable for pharmaceutical facilities.

HWI Global has also announced an international joint venture in the United Arab Emirates with two Middle East firms, ASCI Ltd, a construction management firm, and Energy International Corporation, an exporter of American-based industrial equipment. The company says it is also involved in three other projects where USP 797 standards are being implemented.

Deric Haddad, ceo of HWI Global, said: “HWI previously thought that USP 797 was an American issue, so it seemed that at some point the market segment may slow down. Yet, what we are witnessing in the Middle East is that they are not only adapting the USP 797 architectural and construction standards, but they are also trending toward requiring the type of Level 3 reporting normally seen in bio-pharmaceutical production facilities. This is a perfect fit for our C3 system.”

Haddad says HWI Global’s C3 SmartRoom Information Management System (C3), currently being installed in a UAE-based hospital pharmacy, is the foundation of its domestic and international expansion. The system can be implemented to comply with regulatory standards across many industries worldwide. Completely scalable, the C3 system combines realtime management automation into one customised integrated tool for any life science, healthcare, or research laboratory.
