IEST approves revisions to cleanroom standards

Published: 24-Apr-2009

The US Institute of Environmental Sciences and Technology (IEST) has given its unanimous approval to proposed revisions to ISO 14644 Cleanrooms and associated controlled environments—Part 1: Classification of air cleanliness and Part 2: Specifications for testing and monitoring to prove continued compliance with ISO 14644-1.

Key changes to ISO 14644-1 include the move from a formula-based to a table-based method for determining particle concentrations and a modified statistical approach for establishing sample locations when using discrete-particle-counting, light-scattering instruments. T

he revision of ISO 14644-2 mandates a documented testing and monitoring plan to demonstrate a facility’s continued compliance with ISO 14644-1 for the designated classification of airborne particulate cleanliness.

The implications of these changes will be discussed at a special seminar at IEST-organised Estech 2009, which runs from 4-7 May. Robert Mielke, secretary for ISO Technical Committee 209, Cleanrooms and associated controlled environments, will provide an in-depth review of the revisions.

ISO Technical Committee 209 will meet in September to address members’ comments on the revisions. After the comments are resolved, the updated documents will be issued as Draft International Standards (DIS) that may be purchased and used as trade references in contracts. In the US, the ISO/TC 209 Standards are available from IEST. www.iest.org
