Keraben and NanoPhos create antimicrobial tiles

Tile properties provided by SurfaShield coating technology developed by NanoPhos

Greek nanotechnology company NanoPhos and Keraben, a Spanish manufacturer of ceramic tiles have co-developed the Lifeker brand of self-cleaning and self-sterilising ceramic tiles.

The self-cleaning properties of the tiles are provided by the SurfaShield coating technology developed by NanoPhos, which acts by absorbing light (either sunlight or artificial lighting) and transforming it into a chemical power. As a photocatalyst, SurfaShield nanoparticles are activated by light to produce oxygen and hydroxyl radicals, which continuously decompose organic stains and environmental pollutants without being consumed.

NanoPhos says the SurfaShield technology offers protection from infectious microbes, eliminates fungus growth and minimises the use of cleaning and sterilising products.
