Large teaching hospital tackles VRE

Bioquell’s Room Bio-decontamination Service (RBDS) division understood explicitly the need for urgent treatment of the area affected with hydrogen peroxide vapour (HPV)

Through usual screening methods, the unfortunate discovery of vancomycin-resistant Enterococci (VRE) was found in a urology ward at a large teaching hospital in the north-east of England. Adopting a sound infection control strategy was paramount, with the customer immediately contacting Bioquell to address effective response to the issue.

With more than 700 beds, limiting the cross-contamination factor of healthcare worker or visitor/patient contact became fundamental to controlling this occurrence of nosocomial infection.

While using normal isolation methods may suffice for some, the hospital opted for the wise approach of using Bioquell’s home-grown technology in eradication of the VRE bacteria.

Bioquell’s Room Bio-decontamination Service (RBDS) division understood explicitly the need for urgent treatment of the area affected with hydrogen peroxide vapour (HPV). A team mobilised straightaway and headed for the site, in concurrence with the customer accepting the work to proceed.

Bioquell is proud to offer unparalleled flexibility, delivering a unique professional service to meet the demands of its customers – more often than not, same day.

Martyn Broadbent (RBDS healthcare specialist) explains: 'Modern-day hospitals are unearthing more discoveries of hospital acquired infections (HCAIs), predominately through accurate detection methods. This needn’t be an issue – calling in Bioquell allows such potentially problem-organisms to be eliminated.'

The entire 32-bedded area was turned around in less than 24-hours, with patients returning to a safer environment.
