The ASTHO and CDC want healthcare providers to communicate more with the public regarding HAIs

The US Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO) and Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have launched the Health Department HAI Communication Tools – a suite of materials designed to help enhance communication and coordination around preventing healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) and to reduce the spread of antibiotic resistance.

It says, HAIs present a significant financial burden on the healthcare system, resulting in up to US$ 33 billion in excess medical costs every year.

'Everyone has a role to play. By working together, public health can take action to prevent HAIS and reduce the spread or antibiotic resistance to help keep all patients safe.

What’s included in the toolkit?

  • Key messages and talking points
  • Tips for working with the media
  • How to sustain the conversation around HAIs
  • Social media guide and sample content
  • Calendar of HAI-related events.

Other resources include an infographic, infocard series, and a video entitled 'Know your role in preventing HAIs'.

The tools can be downloaded and the print materials personalised by adding an organisation’s logo, to meet the needs of state and local audiences.

The materials can be found at: http://www.astho.org/Toolkit/Enhancing-HAI-Prevention-and-Outbreak-Response/

There will be an ASTHO/CDC-hosted webinar on Friday, December 16, at 2-3pm ET. Visit the ASTHO website (www.astho.org) to find more information.
