Polymer Group (PGI), a US producer of nonwoven materials, has begun operations in Spain following the purchase of the nonwovens businesses of Tesalca-Texnovo, based in Barcelona.

The Charlotte, North Carolina-based company says its new wholly owned subsidiary, to be called PGI Spain, will strengthen its medical and industrial businesses in the region.

The acquisition has added about 280 employees to more than 3,000 globally. It also expands PGI’s manufacturing capabilities with a presence in Tarragona, Spain consisting of six spun laid lines serving the hygiene, medical and industrial/agricultural segments. The additional lines bring PGI’s global spun laid capacity to more than 285,000 metric tonnes.

Jaime Carreras, previously general manager for Tesalca-Texnovo, has become general manager of the new PGI Spain. He has been with Tesalca-Texnovo for more than 20 years.
