Two landmark UK projects that incorporate cleanroom facilities built by Clean Room Construction (CRC) have attracted international media attention

Two landmark projects that incorporate cleanroom facilities built by Clean Room Construction (CRC) have been at the centre of international media attention at official openings.

On 9 July the STFC RAL Space development and testing facility on the Harwell Campus in Oxfordshire was officially opened by Minister for Universities and Science, Jo Johnson MP – the younger brother of Boris Johnson. Speaking at the opening, Mr Johnson described the facilities as 'world-class'.

The facility is an extension to an existing laboratory to house the largest and most sophisticated space design, production and research facilities. CRC worked with Willmott Dixon to deliver a 1,372m2 facility comprising 15 cleanrooms (Class 5 and 6) for testing satellites for use in future space missions. Five changing areas have also been created and the site includes the UK’s largest thermal vacuum calibration facility. The project represents one of the tallest cleanroom facilities ever built by CRC, with some of the ceilings exceeding 12m in height to accommodate the space-age equipment.

On 3 July The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh formally opened the University of Strathclyde’s flagship Technology and Innovation Centre (TIC). The centre incorporates high quality research and laboratory accommodation, including a cluster of ISO Class 7 cleanrooms. CRC carried out the detailed design and build of dry and wet cleanrooms, a scanning electron microscope cleanroom and measurement cleanroom within the TIC. The centre is now a hub for world-leading research which aims to transform the way academics, business, industry and the public sector work in partnership.

'Clean Room Construction is proud to have been involved in these two ground-breaking projects,' said Steve Lawton, CRC’s Managing Director. 'We have a longstanding reputation for designing and building leading edge cleanroom facilities for clients right across the science and technology sectors. This experience and expertise is critical to the success of complex projects like these.'
