MHRA appoints new Clinical Director of Medical Devices

Neil McGuire joins the Agency on 3 March

The UK's Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has appointed Neil McGuire as its new Clinical Director of Medical Devices with effect from 3 March 2014.

McGuire will join the MHRA from the Royal Air Force Medical Service and the Defence Medical Services where he was a Defence Consultant Adviser in anaesthesia, pain medicine and critical care and latterly the RAF’s Medical Service Senior Consultant and a Queen’s Honorary Surgeon. As a Consultant in anaesthesia and intensive medicine, McGuire brings extensive clinical experience drawn from a wide range of settings, from both within the Services and the NHS at Oxford University Hospitals Trust, to the role.

He has taken a leading role in developing many aspects of clinical practice across the Services during his career and he has always had a keen interest in patient safety, particularly in relation to medical devices.

Dr McGuire has helped to guide advances in the quality of care delivery in Defence and the NHS, working with clinical colleagues and those in industry, engineering and science. He has also been actively engaged with professional bodies, such as the Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland, the Royal College of Anaesthetists and the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine.
