ABN is building the largest temporary hospital in Belgium

The mobile pharmacy enables UZ Gent to prepare their cytostatic and sterile preparations of medicines in cleanrooms in accordance with the strict GMP-guidelines from the PIC/s directive

In collaboration with De Meeuw, ABN Cleanroom Technology is currently constructing the largest temporary hospital pharmacy ever delivered in Belgium (Hospix).

In concrete terms, these updated PIC/s guidelines indicate that from 1 January 2026, stricter requirements will be imposed on the way in which medicines are prepared in hospitals. The hospital will put their new pharmacy into operation in 2023.

To accommodate this temporary cleanroom, ABN and De Meeuw are constructing a modular building with various facilities: a cleanroom for sterile and non-sterile preparations of medicines for use in care and clinical studies, a cleanroom for the production of non-sterile medicines for clinical trials that require a GMP permit and a room for storing and labelling study medication. These facilities will be delivered according to Good Preperation Practices (GPP). These so-called Good Preparation Practices often result in additional cleanroom quality control systems and validations for the cleanroom areas where preparations take place.

Our modular approach perpetuates a fully circular construction process, where after end-of-life, all cleanroom components can be fully recovered

With a surface of no less than 650 metres squared, this cleanroom is at once the largest temporary hospital pharmacy in Belgium. "With De Meeuw as a partner in this project, we have found our equivalent," said Jo Nelissen, founder and CEO of ABN Cleanroom Technology. "Just like us, they apply a modular approach too. This not only allows us to build faster, more reliable and cost-efficient, but also boosts our design-for-circularity approach. Our modular approach perpetuates a fully circular construction process, where after end-of-life, all cleanroom components can be fully recovered."

Through changing business models, such as our Cleanroom-as-a-Service solution, the company offers hospitals the opportunity to respond more quickly to these changing regulations. ABN's patented modular pre-engineered cleanroom systems allow for completely risk-free Pharma4.0 medicine production. Additionally, Hospix is equipped with a CleanConnect IIoT system in order to gain insights in the environmental parameters of the PAL, MAL, the corridor, the cytostatics area and the sterile preparations area.

ABN Cleanroom Technology, founded in 1996, is a design, construction, commissioning and maintenance company specialising in cleanroom activities in the fields of health care, biotechnology, microelectronics, pharmaceuticals, automotive and food processing.
