Alvimedica, a Turkish producer of medical devices, has opened an advanced US$21m production centre in Çatalca, Istanbul. The new 5,500m² facility accommodates Europe’s biggest 10,000 Class cleanroom. It will produce ‘innovative cardiology products’ according to general manager Cem Bozkurt.

Bozkurt says Alvimedica is the first and only company in Turkey to produce angioplasty balloon catheters and cardiology stents. With the expanded production facility and improved technologies it now aims to become the world’s fourth biggest catheter producer.

Bozkurt says Alvimedica will double its production capacity with the addition of the new cleanroom. The company has allocated US$4.5m to r&d this year and forecasts US$22m in turnover in 2009. Sixty per cent of sales currently go to the domestic Turkish market, with the remaining 40% exported to 22 countries worldwide. More than 150 people are employed at the Çatalca factory. www.alvimedica.com
