BAE Systems extends cleanroom

Welconstruct Customer Solutions has won a contract to extend cleanroom facilities at BAE Systems’ Landsystems site in Barrow-in-Furness, UK. The site focuses on the manufacture of arms, munitions and military vehicles.

The contract centres on the extension of an existing cleanroom, built by Welconstruct three years ago, which is used to assemble and test the hydraulic components fitted to the 155mm Howitzer gun. It is being constructed to accommodate the increase in orders for the product.

The footprint of the cleanroom, some 64m2 in size, is being extended by 96m2. As principal contractor, in addition to the design, construction and installation of the cleanroom structure, Welconstruct is supplying an overhead crane, floor coverings, ceiling, partitioning, air-handling and electrics. Crucial to the contract’s success is the management of the project to minimise disruption to output during installation.

Simon Walker, BAE Systems’ manufacturing engineering manager at Barrow, said: “The cleanroom being built achieves high standards of hydraulic cleanliness. Welconstruct was selected for its comprehensive understanding of the air-handling requirements for the cleanroom.”

Welconstruct offers the Welco M64 and C90 partitioning methods as part of a high-grade cleanroom system. These systems have pre-formed junction modules, minimising the number of line joints, providing a hygienic, easy-to-clean surface. Double or triple glazed window units provide a flush joint between panel and glass eliminating horizontal surfaces that trap contaminants. A choice of steel, glass or GRP doors is offered which can be interlocked to maintain maximum cleanroom integrity.
