Bayer MaterialScience has expanded its medical technology portfolio with the acquisition of PolyBioMed, based in Sheffield, UK.

PolyBioMed, formerly a subsidiary of Lombard Medical Technologies, provides polymer coatings, surface treatments and biomaterials to the medical device industry.

The acquisition gives Bayer MaterialScience access to coronary drug-eluting stents in addition to catheter systems for interventional cardiology, urology and neurology. The company aims to provide materials that enhance design, manufacturing and performance for a variety of medical devices.

Bayer MaterialScience will add PolyBioMed’s coatings technologies to its polyurethane-based hydrophilic coatings and offer an extended portfolio of permanent and biodegradable surface modification techniques.

Hans-Wilhelm Engels, senior vice president, Coatings, Adhesives & Specialties at Bayer MaterialScience, said: ‘This acquisition complements our existing portfolio of coatings technologies for the medical device industry and offers us a significant foothold in this large and growing segment. We will be investing further in coatings application and testing facilities, which will significantly expand our services to customers.’

Bayer MaterialScience has acquired the rights to more than 75 patents and patent applications, allowing it to improve coatings adhesion on plastics or metal surfaces used in many medical devices.

Bayer MaterialScience is a leading producer of polymers and high-performance plastics in North America and is part of the global Bayer MaterialScience business.
