ModuBuild is a prefabricated construction kit for hospital interior builds such as operating rooms

When Roper Hospital, part of South Carolina’s 657 bed Roper Healthcare System, unveiled the first-phase of its US$10m Operating Room facilities project in the Fall of 2010, one technology drew quite a bit of interest.

The ModuBuild modular medical construction system from Trumpf uses prefabricated, integrated components including stainless steel wall panels and doors, to provide efficient construction, hygienic and infection control advantages and easy room modifications.

The American Council of Engineering Companies has named the project, which represents the first ModuBuild OR in the US, a 2011 Engineering Excellence Award winner.

Known as the Academy Awards of engineering, the annual, national honour is based on uniqueness, originality, technical complexity, social and economic value and public awareness.

Roper’s Director of Perioperative Services, Lisa Horvath, RN, said: “In terms of infection control, the modular OR is a significant asset.” The stainless steel panels are nonporous and easy to clean. In addition, aspects of the system’s design minimise areas such as horizontal edges and corners where germs can breed.

The longer term benefits include simplified room modifications. “We selected this system because it represents a major leap in efficiency over drywall construction,” she said. The panels allow easy access behind walls to change equipment and wiring, and can be reconfigured or swapped quickly. As a result, equipment updates that can shut down a traditional OR for weeks, can be completed in just a few hours with the ModuBuild Kit.

ModuBuild construction techniques improve speed to completion. “We call this future-proofing the OR,” says Horvath.

“We are sincerely pleased that ModuBuild is being recognized as a leading-edge solution,” said Trumpf sales engineer, Luke Welker. “But more so, we are gratified with the benefits it provides the staff and patients every day.”
