Vetter inaugurates Ravensburg state-of-the-art aseptic filling and packaging plant

Published: 30-Nov--0001

Vetter, the German aseptic filling specialist, has officially inaugurated its Ravensburg Vetter South (RVS) site. Over the past six years the company has invested €150m to expand the 80,000m² site, which now includes state-of-the-art facilities for the aseptic filling and packaging of injectable drugs. The location includes three buildings for production, final assembly and packaging, plus a laboratory for production-related analysis. Investment of €50m to further expand pharmaceutical production is now underway.

The Ravensburg site boasts numerous sophisticated features including: maximum production automation; the use of RABS (Restricted Access Barrier Systems); central material supply with optimised material flows; and two independent filling lines.

The two filling lines took three years to build and started operation in 2007. Liquid and freeze-dried drugs are filled into Vetter Lyo-Ject and V-LK dual-chamber systems on the RVS 1 multiformat line and into cartridges and vials on the RVS 2 combination line.

The facility was designed and built with the ongoing expansion in mind, allowing production to continue without any disruption from the construction work. Final preparations are currently being made for a third production line. All work on this project is scheduled for completion by mid 2011.

The company says its sophisticated Vetter Secondary Packaging (VSP) facility provides ideal conditions for pharmaceutical final assembly. A classified hygienic production area maintains the highest quality and safety standards, the room layout provides optimal protection against any mixing or contamination, and material and staff movements follow the latest GMP requirements.

The new VSP facility, in which the final assembly and packaging of the pre-filled injection systems is undertaken, is the final stage of the company’s complete service offering. The entire process, from hand packaging and the assembly of pens, auto-injectors and safety devices to the fully automated final packaging, takes place at the RVS plant. It has been fully operational since May 2009.

The RVS-Lab is the final component of the RVS site. The building includes a microbiological lab and chemical analysis area in new, specially designed spaces.
