Ebiox alcohol-free wipe cleans and disinfects cleanroom surfaces and medical devices

Ebiox, a UK supplier of anti-microbial products, has introduced a biodegradable, antimicrobial wipe that cleans and disinfects medical devices and hard surfaces, killing harmful bacteria.

The Trionic D biodegradable wipes use a high wet strength biodegradable cellulose fibre sheet, which can be disposed of after use through a macerator unit within a hospital sluice room, thus avoiding the need to dispose of it within a clinical waste stream.

The wipes contain organic hydroxil, stabilising agents, polymeric biguanide complex and surface-active agents and will kill a range of organisms including MRSA, salmonella, staphylococcus, HIV and Herpes simplex. They are free from alcohol, aldehydes, chlorine, phenols and halogens and are supplied in a foil sealed canister containing 200 wipes.

Ebiox's commercial director, Jeff Smith said: "To differentiate Trionic D from other antimicrobials, its basic chemistry relies on Quarternary ammonium compounds. However the proven in use success of Trionic D is due to the relative ratios and synergistic nature of the blend selected; and further blending with effective surfactants enabling the product to remove soil and biofilms – virtually lifting them away from a surface. This then allows the antimicrobials to deal with residual micro-organisms. Careful selection of a robust and durable (yet easily disposable) wipe fabric was also central to Trionic's efficiency in the disinfection process."

Great Ormond Street Hospital has completed a six-month trial of the wipes and Ebiox is engaged in discussions with other potential customers, while also seeking to extend the use of the Ebiox Trionic formulation to other healthcare and hygiene applications.

The Warrington, Cheshire-based firm also offers Ebiox Esense, a non-alcohol based hand rub, which is dispensable in a foam pump. The company says the product is effective against a range of bacteria and is fully compliant with European standards for hygienic hand rubs used in medical environments. The formulation is chlorhexidine and triclosan-free and encourages frequent use to protect users from potential cross contamination and as a defence in public places.

The Ebiox range includes hand hygiene products, surface disinfectants and products to clean and decontaminate surgical instruments.

Ebiox reported sales growth of 53% in the three months to September 2009, following a cash injection by private investors. International healthcare group Healthcare Enterprise Group holds a 20% interest in the company.
