Invests US$1m to provide added capacity once products go into commercial development

Precision Coating, a subsidiary of Katahdin Industries in the US, has opened a new dedicated medical device coatings facility in Boston, MA. The 7,500ft2 manufacturing plant is the result of a US$1m investment by the company to provide added capacity for medical device companies with high commercial volumes.

Precision Coating handles medical devices such as guide wires, core wires, hypotubes and forming mandrels. In addition to its proprietary low friction polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), the company also offers other PTFE systems including zero-perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and chromic acid free coatings. The company has a flexible prototype facility in Dedham, MA, but says it needed space to accommodate higher volumes once products go into commercial development.

Robert DeAngelis, president, Precision Coating, said: ‘This facility, which is designed for medical device coatings only, offers a controlled environment that better manages air quality and particle count – key differentiators that raise the bar on quality and performance in this industry.’
