With over 30 years experience in various product handling, collating, pick and pack fulfilment, it was only a matter of time before I was asked to action medical products packing. As such, I invited various cleanroom installation companies to design and build my first cleanroom. I was staggered at the cost, when I was quoted over £140k for two cleanrooms.

I therefore decided to build my own cleanroom to hospital standards, using flooring and special easy-clean ceilings, as used within hospitals. I also installed LED ceiling lights, HEPA-filters, magnahelix gauges, industrial fan system as well as all the required equipment, such as pass-through units and pass-over benches, pouch heat sealing machine, scrubs, crocs etc.

The two cleanrooms were built at a total cost of £64k with all the equipment required to achieve an ISO Class 8 facility.

Cleanroom 1:
•30ft x 20ft x 8ft (approx 9.14m x 6m x 2.4m)
• ISO Class 8
• With regulated airflow cleanroom for surgical instrument pouch packing with adjoining changing rooms
• Accredited for IS0 13485::2012, ISO 9001:2008 and ISO 14644 parts 1,2,3 & 4

Cleanroom 2:
•30ft x 20ft x 8ft (approx 9.14m x 6m x 2.4m)
• ISO Class 10
• For various medical product collation and packing

My third cleanroom (ISO Class 7) was built in 2013.

Cleanroom 3:

•15ft x 12ft x 8ft (4.6m x 3.6m x 2.4m)
•ISO Class 7
• With regulated airflow, adjoining surgical instrument washroom to HTM2030
• Built for just £21k

By self-building the three cleanrooms, I saved over 50% on cost compared with the cleanroom manufacturers' quotes, yet still gained an excellent ISO Class for each room.

These rooms have been designed and built to a very high standard, are 100% sealed to ensure no leakages and to maintain a minimum of 28 air changes per hour, and we constantly achieve an ISO Class 7 Quarterly Bioburden Testing through Swann-Morton Labs.

If you are a small to medium size company and are considering building your own cleanroom, I would be delighted to assist you.
