Germfree integrates AI aseptic monitoring into Smarthood IV compounding system

The cleanroom containment expert has partnered with Nuvai Medical Technologies to integrate AI-powered aseptic technique monitoring into its Smarthood sterile IV compounding workspace

Germfree and Nuvai Medical Technologies have announced a partnership to integrate Nuvai’s Aseptique AI-powered aseptic monitoring platform into Germfree’s Smarthood IV compounding system.

Germfree specialises in modular cleanroom infrastructure and containment, while Nuvai develops technologies focused on pharmacy medication preparation and aseptic technique monitoring.

The integration is designed to provide hospital pharmacies with real-time visibility into aseptic technique using cameras already incorporated into the Smarthood system, without requiring additional hardware.

The Smarthood system was launched in 2024 by Germfree, and in 2025, Erith Welch, the Senior Product Manager for Equipment at Germfree, discussed the journey of the design for it and how it helps with future compliance.

On the other hand, Nuvai’s Aseptique uses artificial intelligence and machine learning to assess aseptic techniques during medication compounding.

The combined system will identify aseptic technique deviations and provide individual technicians with dashboards showing where breaches have occurred.

The companies said the technology is intended to shift monitoring from periodic assessments and retrospective microbiological testing towards real-time oversight of compounding practices.

Pharmacy leaders will also have access to an enterprise-wide dashboard to monitor performance trends across the department.

Germfree said the integration builds on the existing functionality of its Smarthood platform, which combines scanning, gravimetric verification, photo documentation and label printing within the sterile field.

“By combining Smarthood with Aseptique, we are extending the value of a platform our customers already trust,” said Judd Baker, VP of Healthcare at Germfree.

Together, we are giving pharmacy teams actionable insight into aseptic technique and helping strengthen the safety and consistency of IV compounding.

The companies said the system is intended to support continuous improvement in IV compounding, reduce the risk of compounding errors and reinforce aseptic best practices.

Aseptique can also use its camera system to monitor the frequency and completeness of hood cleaning, according to Nuvai.
