Hygienic design ultrasonic detector withstands wash-down environments

Published: 21-May-2009

US-based Banner Engineering has introduced a stainless steel ultrasonic sensor that withstands the heat and high wash pressures of sanitary operations. The U-GAGE M25U is said to be the first ultrasonic sensor with both hygienic design using FDA-approved materials and IP69K rating for use in harsh environments, making it suitable for demanding food, beverage and pharmaceutical applications.

The sensor operates over a wide temperature range of –20° to +70°C and can withstand high-pressure sprays at up to 100 bar and harsh chemicals for cleaning. It uses stainless steel transducers to create and receive the ultrasonic signal instead of traditional ceramic transducers that cannot survive in washdown conditions. For easy cleaning and disinfecting, the smooth 316 stainless steel housing has no threading, gaps or seams to trap contaminants.

Designed primarily for OEM use on bottling machines and conveyor systems, the sensor detects presence or absence of clear or colored containers during sanitising or other clean-in-place procedures. It can also be used for food process and position monitoring and aseptic bottling in contained environments.
