Bioquell is doing all it can to help reduce and limit the spread of Ebola

Guinea Bissau, a small Portuguese-speaking country in West Africa, has recently taken receipt of a Bioquell Q-10, hydrogen peroxide vapour (HPV) and a generator suite as part of a plan to prevent the incursion and spread of Ebola.

The equipment was ordered through Bioquell’s Portuguese distributor, Dias de Sousa, and supplied to the Portuguese Mission deployed to Guinea Bissau to establish a mobile laboratory at the Hospital Simão Mendes facilities to perform the molecular diagnostic of Ebola disease.

The mission is co-ordinated by INEM (The Portuguese Emergency Medical Institute), and the team includes additional professionals from the INSA (Portuguese National Institute of Health) and DGS (Portuguese Directorate-General of Health), such as highly trained emergency doctors, nurses and researchers.

The decontamination system was part of a wider package, predominantly made up of laboratory equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE). This was deployed to provide the country with a laboratory that has the capacity to perform the molecular detection of Ebola virus within five hours, as well as, a rapid rescue and transportation service of suspect Ebola victims to dedicated isolation and treatment centres.

Of primary importance was to quickly identify and isolate such cases coming into the country from outside in order to prevent the spread of Ebola to the wider community. This concern is real, as Guinea Bissau borders Republic of Guinea, Senegal and Mali. The Republic of Guinea is still experiencing the tragic consequences of the ongoing Ebola outbreak.
