Charles River assists in the discovery, development, and safe manufacture of new drug therapies

To continually meet their cell and gene therapy clients’ evolving needs, Charles River added nine cleanroom production suites to provide high throughput capability for early to late-stage cell therapy supply serving multiple markets inside an existing building shell.

AES, PTSI, and Barry-Wehmiller Design Group were aligned in partnership for the successful on-schedule and on-budget delivery of this complex build-out. AES utilised its proprietary conceptual design service, Compass, to set the direction of the facility development. This helped to clearly define the worldwide regulatory strategy that set the framework for AES’ Faciliflex Modular Cleanroom, which consisted of nine pre-configured modular facility blocks, each independent of the others, to enable multi-product manufacturing.

Due to the intricate design limitations of an existing and operational shell building, the team developed a 3-dimensional building information model (BIM) that was the focal point for the design team’s collaboration. This virtual model helped significantly reduce changes during the build process, which could have resulted in additional costs and schedule impacts.

AES Clean Technology has been providing industry-leading cleanroom design-build insights that align with the ever-evolving manufacturing needs of autologous and allogeneic cell therapy modalities and with the pharmaceutical industry as a whole.
