The 2017 S-Lab Awards shortlist is now available, featuring 46 entries from 11 countries in five continents. The winners will be celebrated at a gala dinnier at York Racecourse, UK on 9 May.
The six building award categories are: Life Science Research; Translational Research; Physical Sciences; Innovation-Focused; Sustainable and Refurbished. The other categories are: Laboratory Effectiveness; Environmental Improvement; Best New Product; Best New Product Concept; and Making a Difference.
S-Lab is a not-for-profit initiative that works with university, research institutes and other laboratory sectors and stakeholders to support good practice in laboratory design, operation and management. It does so through experience-sharing events, the S-Lab Awards scheme and other projects.
The S-Lab Awards were established to promote examples of good practice and innovation that would encourage university and other laboratory owners to improve their performance.
Most of the 2017 award entries will be presenting in York on 9-10 May when S-Lab will be collaborating with the UK Science Parks Association and other partners on a large scale Conference.
The event – Science Innovation and Translation: The Design and Operation of Research Laboratories, Incubators and Science Park Facilities – will include presentations on good practice in setting up and managing innovation facilities in UK and North America, including a keynote on the University of Michigan’s 185,000m2 North Campus Research Complex, and cases from the Babraham Institute, Bristol Unit DX, Newcastle Science Central, and the University of Strathclyde’s Technology and Innovation Centre.
It also includes examples from new translational research facilities, new and refurbished life science research facilities and physical science facilities.
It will cover best practice new labs in many disciplines such as contamination avoidance; cryogenics, pH measurement; sample management and storage; purified water issues; core facilities/equipment sharing; lean laboratory approaches, ventilation best practice and updates; in vivo facilities, flexible services; and space management and costing.
Energy and sustainability are also key themes.
