Connect 2 Cleanrooms recently completed the installation of a softwall cleanroom within temporary buildings at Raigmore Hospital, Inverness, Scotland.
The need for this particular cleanroom arose following a review that included a self-assessment survey by the Scottish NHS trust on the sterilisation and packing of products within the CSSD (Sterile Services Departments). The findings of this survey initially found that only four out 28 hospitals within Scotland were meeting the Medical Device Standard EN46002.
Due to greater risks of CJD within certain opthalmological and neurosurgical procedures, commitment was made to improve standards throughout many CSSDs. One hospital within the scope of these improvements was Raigmore.
During the upgrading of the existing CSSD facilities it was decided to relocate part of its instrument packing functions to temporary facilities adjacent to the department in a temporary building. This building was sited to retain direct access in to the main hospital building.
Connect 2 Cleanrooms was tasked with equipping this temporary building with a Softwall cleanroom that would achieve ISO Class 14644-1 Class 8. The cleanroom was delivered to schedule and fully installed and validated with only three days on site. The room has a volume 233m3 and achieved an air change rate of 85.11 changes per hour. The layout of the room was divided into three zones allowing air quality to be varied and monitored within these zones.
The softwall cleanroom was successfully validated to the above standard. It met the acceptance criteria and exceeded the required air change rates and particulate levels on the day of testing.
