The controlled environment expert has completed an expansion of an operational plasma-derived medicines plant, delivering new Grade C cleanrooms and an upgraded high-speed filling line

BES, a controlled environment expert, has successfully completed a major expansion of a plasma-derived medicines manufacturing facility in the UK.

The expansion of the existing operational building incorporates an enlarged Grade C suite and new sterile filling line engineered for a higher run rate.

“It was a pleasure to work on such a significant construction, albeit a complex and challenging project, while ensuring production operations continued as usual,” said Louis Edwards, Project Manager at BES..

The expansion included complex structural modifications, such as removal of the building’s front facade, more than 31 tonnes of concrete and a complete strip-out of the existing infrastructure of the building.

BES delivered the concept design and civil works of the building and commissioned and validated the high-purity process utilities.

The expanded facility supports the manufacture of a broader range of plasma-derived medicinal products (PDMPs)  for immune deficiencies and autoimmune conditions.

BES’s team coordinated the design, installation, commissioning and validation of critical utilities.

During the commissioning and validation phases, the team worked on operational readiness testing and enabling the facility to enhance overall output without compromising existing product sterility or regulatory compliance.

The team carried out all the structural modifications, cleanroom extensions and installation of new utilities without shutting down production, so manufacturing of plasma-derived medicines continued throughout the project.

Other live site operations

In addition to this strategic capacity expansion, this year BES also delivered a modular Quality Control (QC) laboratory in southwest England, using 29 prefabricated units and engineering solutions to achieve vibration‑free conditions on a live operational site.

The company is also supporting a major energy efficiency upgrade at a leading UK pharmaceutical campus as part of the Macclesfield Efficient Energy Project (MEEP), modernising utilities infrastructure within a live environment.
