Hekuma automates pipette tip production

Published: 17-Aug-2009

German automation specialist Hekuma has developed an advanced automation line for the production of pipette tips.

The mould open time of the Netstal Elion is approximately 0.45sec, thus product cycle times of 4.9sec and less are possible. This increase in speed is ensured by the SEW Eurodrive technology, which gives the side entry robot a maximum acceleration of more than 9G, as well as by the weight-optimised design of the take-out gripper.

Essential parts are made from aluminium, milled from solid metal, which reduces the weight by 30% compared with welded steel frames, without any compromises on rigidity and long-term stability.

A further advantage is cleanroom compatibility because components such as valves and sensors are enclosed in the body of the robot. Nevertheless, all of these components are easily accessible.

Pipette tips are produced at a very high quality, which the company says can only be realised by 100% quality control. Hekuma uses the efficient picture processing systems of its partner Ziemann & Urban, which means that each pipette tip is checked regarding the precise compliance of the outer and inner diameter. Accordingly, 32 pipette tips of each cycle are measured with an accuracy of up to 5/1000mm. All operational steps of the automation line can be monitored by Hekuma’s PC-based process visualisation, which compared with classic SPS-based visualisation offers a wider range of functions, improved user-friendliness and reduced capacity utilisation of the SPS control system. The visualisation clearly shows all system situations and process parameters and allows errors to be localised quickly.
