IEST updates recommended practice for filter media testing

Published: 9-Dec-2009

A revised edition of the Recommended Practice (RP) Testing HEPA and ULPA Filter Media is available from the US Institute of Environmental Sciences and Technology (IEST).

IEST-RP-CC021.3 discusses test methods for physical and filtration properties of high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) and ultra low penetration air (ULPA) filtration media. Methods detailed in the RP include: a test for resistance to airflow; a ULPA filter media penetration test—particle count method; thickness tests; an impact score tensile strength test; and a test for weight loss at elevated temperature.

IEST-RP-CC021.3 also covers testing for HEPA and ULPA filter media penetration, basis weight, tensile strength and elongation. A handy table provides guidelines for equipment calibration frequency. Applications of this document include acceptance criteria for test methods, test aerosol and particle size, and test face velocity.
