New cleanroom for University of Surrey
Medical Air Technology has recently completed the design and build of a new Containment Level 3 laboratory valued in excess of £140,000 for the Microbial Sciences Group in the School of Biomedical and Molecular Sciences at the University of Surrey. The facility, which is on the top floor of the sciences building, covers an area of approximately 20m2. It will enable research in a safe and contained environment. The facility is designed in accordance with latest ACDP (Advisory Committee on Dangerous Pathogens) guidelines. It incorporates three rooms: the entrance lobby, anti-room and the containment laboratory that are operating at balanced negative pressures with the supply and extract air via HEPA filters. One hundred percent of the air is provided by a dedicated roof mounted air handling unit; the balance flow extraction is via two patented TriMAT class I Microbiological Safety Cabinets and a bespoke TriMAT Class III containment system that was tailored in its design to meet the special needs of the research team. The entire suite was finished in welded sheet vinyl to ensure that an easy-clean, durable, safe and leakproof structure was guaranteed. The ability to seal off the suite for gaseous sterilisation was incorporated into the design, as was a 'man down' alarm and a link into the University BMS (building management system).
