New standards for clothing released

Published: 6-Sep-2004

The International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) has released two standards to help health service and laboratory managers check the effectiveness of protective clothing against biological contamination. They lay down laboratory tests measuring the penetration resistance of clothing materials to blood, body fluids and other potentially infectious materials. Said ISO: "They will enable manufacturers to develop protective clothing that will reduce the potential of direct skin contact to a variety of blood-borne viruses by medical personnel." One test uses synthetic blood and the other a microorganism similar to the Hepatitis C virus in size and shape that can also mimic hepatitis B and HIV.
