Safer powder transfer

Published: 1-Oct-2007

The development of increasingly potent compounds provides a challenge for both the pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical industry in ensuring the safe containment of powders during transfer between processes.

Split Butterfly Valve technology presents a flexible and dependable containment solution. PSL’s patented split butterfly valve, the PSL ChargePoint, involves a direct metal-to-metal seal, eliminating the need for an ‘O’ ring or inflatable seal, providing reliable and robust containment guaranteeing operator safety. The precision-engineered valve is an ideal addition to a wide variety of applications from reactor vessel charging to contained sampling, from small additions to bulk FIBC discharge.

To comply with the most stringent of operator exposure requirements, enhancements to the ChargePoint system have enabled occupational exposure level’s (OELs) to be reduced to low nanogram levels. The Extraction Ring provides a cost effective solution for existing valves while the Vortex System, with integral wash between the valve disks, is a compact, space-saving design for maximum containment efficiency and effectiveness.

The ChargePoint range includes pressure rated valves, rated at 6BarG, which allow the contained transfer of material between pressurised vessels without compromising containment. To meet the rigorous cleaning requirements found in multi product facilities, there are also a series of CIP solutions available across the range.

The PSL Aseptic ChargePoint offers the ability to make repeated sterile powder transfers without compromising containment integrity. The independently validated and patented design is ideal for use in biopharmaceutical applications, formulation and the production of parenterals.
