South Korea’s SK Hynix has outlined plans to establish an autonomous fab by 2030, aiming to automate and optimise semiconductor production using advanced artificial intelligence and digital technologies.
The company executives announced the establishment of the autonomous fab at Nvidia’s GTC 2026 conference this month.
The initiative is designed to address rapid growth in memory chip demand, especially for high‑bandwidth memory used in AI workloads.
The move will also improve cleanroom production performance across its fabrication facilities.
Cleanrooms and next‑gen fab technology
The autonomous fab concept centres on extending automation deep into the facility’s cleanroom.
SK Hynix’s roadmap includes deploying AI‑enabled systems to monitor, control and adjust cleanroom processes with minimal human intervention.
The plan includes enhancing precision and reducing defects in extreme ultraviolet lithography, etching and other nanometre‑scale steps.
Cleanrooms are critical to semiconductor manufacturing because even microscopic contaminants can compromise circuit integrity.
SK Hynix also has expansion projects underway, such as new cleanrooms at fabs in Cheongju and Yongin, with the Yongin facility due to be opened by March 2027.
The company has also completed construction of its M16 fabrication plant in Icheon, South Korea, which features EUV lithography equipment for advanced DRAM production.
AI and digital twin integration
SK Hynix said its autonomous fab vision will be built around three technological pillars:-
Operational AI: will serve as a decision‑making “brain” for production optimisation, defect detection and maintenance scheduling;

Physical AI: to manage cleanroom floor activities, logistics and robotics; and

Digital twin models: that create virtual replicas of fab environments for real‑time simulation, layout testing and scenario planning.
The use of digital twins is intended to reduce trial‑and‑error on actual cleanroom production lines.
This will enable SK Hynix to simulate material flows, equipment interactions and environmental factors before changes are applied on the manufacturing floor.
The broader landscape of surging AI memory demand
Executives highlighted that while Korea and the United States are expanding fab capacity, simply building more facilities is not sufficient to meet surging AI memory demand.The autonomous fab initiative aims to boost productivity and shorten the transition from design to mass production through reduced reliance on manual input and enhanced cleanroom automation.
No specific location for the autonomous fab has been announced, but SK Hynix’s current and forthcoming plants in Cheongju and the Yongin semiconductor cluster will likely serve as foundations for the new technologies.
