Sterigenics opens X-ray sterilisation facility at North Carolina campus

The sterilisation and decontamination provider has opened a new facility to expand irradiation process capacity at their Haw River site for manufacturers across medical devices

Sterigenics has opened a new X-ray sterilisation facility at its Haw River, North Carolina campus, expanding the company’s irradiation processing capacity in the southeastern US.

The facility, located adjacent to Sterigenics’ existing gamma sterilisation operation, was officially opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on 24 March attended by local officials, industry partners, customers and employees.

“Our new X-ray facility incorporates innovative technology designed to enhance product safety while enabling high-throughput processing,” said Mike Rutz, President of Sterigenics.

The company announced plans to expand US operations with the new X-ray sterilisation facility in May 2025.

According to the company, the new operation is designed to provide additional capacity and greater flexibility for a range of product configurations, supporting manufacturers in the medical device, pharmaceutical, biopharmaceutical, food safety and commercial sectors.

The Haw River campus is located around 30 minutes from Research Triangle Park and 90 minutes from North Carolina’s BioPharma Crescent, positioning the facility to serve growing demand for sterilisation services in the region.

The new facility incorporates X-ray technology designed to support high-throughput processing and broaden the company’s available irradiation capacity

Sterigenics’ global sterilisation network now comprises 49 facilities worldwide and offers technologies including gamma irradiation, ethylene oxide, electron beam, nitrogen dioxide and X-ray sterilisation.

The company also joined forces with Nelson Labs in 2021 to expand a centre of excellence for microbiological testing and increased sterilisation capacity in Wiesbaden, Germany.
