Stevian development keeps bacteria at bay in the biotechnology industry

A biotechnology company has utilised the latest in flooring technology to deliver state-of-the-art protection for its Asian plant.

The Stevian Biotechnology Corporation, a biotechnology company in the South East Asian region, has invested in a polyfunctional biotechnology plant in Sepang, Malaysia. The plant is capable of producing enzymatically enhanced natural sweeteners and an entire range of biotechemical products and derivatives. International project engineers MEI Consulting, of Penang, specified the flooring and wall-coatings for the facility. They were looking for systems with a proven track record in the biotechnology industry where protection against bacteria is a key requirement. The systems selected came from Flowcrete Specialist Flooring, based in Manchester, which has a range of hygienic products geared to the needs of the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. For the production areas at Stevian, Flowcrete's Ultrafresh MF anti-microbial flooring was installed at a thickness of 3mm. Mark Greaves, Flowcrete Group managing director, said: "This product is a self-smoothing, polyurethane system that is installed as a seamless application to provide an easy-to-clean, hard-wearing, low maintenance finish." It is particularly suited to dry or semi-wet processing and packaging areas. Furthermore, by incorporating the anti-microbial additive Ultra-Fresh within the floor finish, the system provides additional protection between cleaning cycles by inhibiting the growth of bacteria, fungi, mould and mildew. Ultra-Fresh is effective against most bacteria, including e-coli, listeria welshimeri, staphylococcus aureus and salmonella choleraesuis. Any bacteria coming into contact with the floor surface are attracted to and absorb the anti-microbial.
