The future of sterilisation monitoring

The Electronic Test System (ETS) from 3M Health Care is a recent innovation in the measurement of the physical parameters of a steam sterilisation cycle. According to the company, the standalone device "has been designed to revolutionise sterilisation monitoring procedures by eliminating subjective interpretation of results, indicating failure causes, and allowing computer-aided graphic analysis and precise data archiving". Developed in consultation with leading sterile service professionals, the ETS provides the security of accurate and independent sterilisation testing. Its performance is equivalent to the standard Bowie & Dick Test Pack; however, it combines additional features that contribute to ensuring the safe operation of sterilisers. Unlike other test systems, the ETS clearly signals the test result as "pass" or "fail" and also features an early warning function permitting identification of borderline test results and the potential source of a fault. The ETS is can be reused up to 400 times. Based on statistical usage of once a day for six days, order placing can be restricted to once every 18 months.
