The University of Sheffield has invested £10m to create a new Nanoscience and Technology Centre that incorporates the UK's largest cleanroom laboratory for research into semiconductors, nanomagnetics and other devices.

The centre will provide state-of-the-art facilities and support for high-tech businesses in the region, and includes a suite of business incubator offices and laboratories.

Jim Lindop, ceo of Sheffield based semiconductor firm Jennic said: “The University of Sheffield has created an excellent facility to support high-growth businesses. The flexible combination of offices, product test laboratories, and access to a semi-conductor cleanroom, is going to meet the needs of a wide range of technology based high growth companies and supports the areas' strength in digital industries.”

It is hoped that the investment will develop r&d capacity and tap into the economic potential of the Sheffield area.
