Virusolve+ shown to be effective against C. diff in hospital trials
Torbay Acute NHS Trust and Torbay PCT in the UK have evaluated an new disinfectant and found it to be effective against Clostridium difficile spores.
Virusolve+ is a detergent cleanser that can destroy micro-organisms on contact. Made by Amity, a speciality chemical manufacturer, the new product combines a cleanser and disinfectant in a non-toxic, biodegradable compound that is simple and safe to use.
The blend of dodeclymine structures, solvents and detergent can be used on all surfaces - fabric, rubber, plastic, vinyl, melamine, hard and soft materials - to destroy bacteria, fungi, viruses and spores, safely. The product penetrates the membranes of bacteria and viruses destroying RNA and rendering cells incapable of replication or mutation.
The number of UK C. diff cases rose 7% between 2005 and 2006, to 55,620 in 2006. Ram Singh, technical director and ceo of Amity said: “This represents the most stringent testing any product can undergo i.e. in a real world situation used at ward level, not just in a test tube or petri dish. We are delighted to have Virusolve+ confirmed as the brand leader that it is.
“The healthcare sector has long awaited an alternative to chlorine-based agents; which corrode metals, degenerate plastics and cause respiratory problems. This approval will allow them to move forward and away from these problems. It will also be welcomed as a safer alternative for the employees (domestics & nurses) and patients who use or are exposed to these chemicals when maintaining the critical standards of hospital hygiene.”
