Wates starts first phase for pharma giant
Wates Group, the UK construction and development company, has started work on a £19m project to construct a prestigious new UK research laboratory for global pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The contract is the first of a four-phase expansion plan that forms part of Eli Lilly's global strategy for research. The ultimate goal is to establish the Erl Wood Manor site at Windlesham, Surrey, as a centre of excellence for neuroscience research. There is strong competition within the pharmaceutical sector for suitably trained and experienced staff and it is predicted that this new facility will prove a major draw for potential employees. The project includes the construction of a 4,900m2 chemistry laboratory over two floors. The lab building will be constructed of reinforced concrete frame with pre-cast concrete rainscreen cladding and extensive curtain walling. Wates' existing clients include GlaxoSmithkline, Hewlett Packard, Unilever and Pfizer.
