A supplier to over 5,000 NHS hospital wards in the UK has introduced a new infection control contaminant kit, which it claims addresses the needs of emergency response teams fighting major infection outbreaks such as bird flu.

GreenValet, which supplies cleaning and infection control products, showcased the new specialised personal protective equipment (PPE) at this week’s Infection Control Nurses Association (ICNA) conference in Brighton.

"Infection control specialists, medical, nursing, ambulance, cleaning and other staff in hospitals, clinics and laboratories must be ready to respond to acute infection emergencies without delay,” said Catherine Pegna, GreenValet's director of business development. “To do this safely and effectively they need priority access to top quality personal protective equipment (PPE). The kit keeps essential PPE ready and waiting so precious time is not lost in the early stages of an emergency situation sourcing equipment and getting it to the right places. Key staff can get on doing the job they have been trained for."

GreenValet supplies kits, waste bags and waste information systems used to deliver services and improve performance in healthcare cleaning, laundry, linen supply, catering, infection control and facilities management.

Research amongst trusts and NHS Supply Chain has shown that emergency response staff value the kit concept. It ensures interconnected items of essential specialist equipment are always available together.

Infection control containment kits can be configured for medical, laboratory, nursing and care staff. Contents have been carefully researched and meet requirements laid down by the World Health Organization, the Department of Health and the UK Health and Safety Executive, the company said.

The kits are rigid, lightweight and come in a wall mountable carry case, making them ideal to be carried and stored in key locations.
