Haslington Cheese opts for UV disinfection

Haslington Cheese has installed two Hanovia ultraviolet disinfection tunnels at its Cheshire processing plant. The UV tunnels disinfect packed blocks of cheese before they pass into the high-care production area of the plant.

The UK's leading cheese supplier to the food manufacturing industry, Haslington processes a wide range of shredded, grated and sliced cheese for use in ready-made meals. Recent investment in an additional high-care production facility ensures all products are processed in a controlled atmosphere which meets the food industry's rigorous hygiene standards.

The UV tunnels ensure all packaging surrounding the cheese entering the high-care area is free from microbial contamination.

”We chose UV for two reasons," said Aidan Wilson, the company's technical director: "Firstly, we wanted to keep the high-care area dry, which ruled out using chemical sprays or dips. Secondly, we already had a duct-mounted UV unit installed in our air conditioning system and were impressed with its performance."

UV causes permanent deactivation of microorganisms by destroying their DNA. It is a low-maintenance technology that leaves no residues on the disinfected material. Silent in operation, Hanovia UV systems are simple and safe to operate and can be supplied as pre-assembled units.
