Rapid Micro Biosystems reported total revenue of $8.1m for the second quarter of 2026, up from $7.3m in the same period last year, as recurring and consumable revenues continued to grow.
The life sciences technology company specialises in microbiology automation to help drug makers test products faster and reduce human error.
The company placed four new Growth Direct systems during the quarter and completed nine customer system validations, bringing the total number of Growth Direct systems placed globally to 200.
Consumable revenue increased by more than 20% year-on-year, while recurring revenue rose 14% to $5m and accounted for 63% of total quarterly revenue.
Product revenue increased 10.1% to $5.3m, while service revenue rose 12.5% to $2.8m.
Rapid Micro Biosystems also reported a record second-quarter gross margin of 15%, compared with 3.8% in the second quarter of 2025.
"As we look to the second half of 2026, we remain encouraged by strong customer engagement, continued momentum in multi-system and enterprise deployment opportunities, and an expanding contribution from our collaboration with MilliporeSigma,” said Robert Spignesi, President and CEO of Rapid Micro Biosystems.
The company's Growth Direct platform automates microbial quality control testing used in pharmaceutical manufacturing, including for biologics, vaccines, cell and gene therapies and sterile injectables.
In March, Rapid Micro Biosystems announced a follow-on multi-system order from Samsung Biologics to expand deployment of its Growth Direct platform across the contractor’s manufacturing operations.
Looking ahead, Rapid Micro Biosystems reaffirmed its full-year 2026 revenue guidance of between $37m and $41m and expects to place between 30 and 38 Growth Direct systems during the year.
It also maintained guidance for a full-year gross margin of approximately 20%, while increasing its system validation forecast to at least 27 customer validations.
Meanwhile, Merck and Rapid Micro Biosystems are hosting Growth Direct Days 2026 on October 13 and 14, 2026, at the Merck Innovation Center in Darmstadt, Germany.
The days are intended to support customer engagement, education and commercial pipeline development across Europe.
