New cleanroom for medical research facility

Specialist contractor Thermal Transfer, a member of the SSE Contracting Group, has recently completed a 0.37m Euro turnkey cleanroom project for a medical research centre in West Sussex. Based on the East Grinstead site of The Queen Victoria Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, the world-renowned Blond McIndoe Centre that pioneered plastic surgery during World War Two, undertakes medical research into new treatments for burns injuries, wound healing, corneal restoration and cartilage repair. In order to comply with new EU legislation and achieve Department of Health accreditation, the centre's existing laboratories for tissue culture had to be upgraded to MHRA standards. Thermal Transfer's Swindon office had total responsibility for refurbishing the 1960s accommodation, including the design, supply, installation and commissioning of the new facilities. The new suite included a 48m2 grade B cleanroom, change and preparation areas to grade B and C, safety cabinets and laboratory furniture. The company designed all the new mechanical and electrical services and included a new HVAC system of supply air handling unit, two air cooled condensers and terminal units with HEPA filters to 99.995% efficiency. "We are absolutely delighted with our new facility. We can now fully comply with the latest regulations and meet all our expansion needs for the next five years at least," said Dr. Liz James, head of research at Blond McIndoe Centre.
